Protect Your Personal Information
Practice security by obscurity; only share what information you have to. Don’t give out account details, home addresses and other sensitive information.
Don’t help a burglar. Telling people your home or work is unoccupied, you’re alone or any other sensitive information is a bad idea.
Tip: One of the easiest ways to improve security is to have a strong password. Password generators such as LastPass are great for making unique and hard-to-guess passwords.
Don’t Automatically Trust Someone
Always use discretion when dealing with people. Do they seem genuine? Try to verify that they are who they claim to be. If they say they’re from a particular business, call that business and verify their claim.
View The Item In Person
Inspecting the item is essential. Make sure the listing is genuine and the item is as described. When buying wine grapes inspect them for disease, damage and quality. When buying equipment, examine it to find any potential issues.
Arrange a safe meeting place, preferably in public with other people around. If this is not possible notify someone of where the meeting will take place.
Tip: Tell a white lie. As you approach the other person, pretend to be on the phone and say something like, “I’ll call you back in a sec, I’m meeting [insert name] to buy/sell an item”.
Paying For The Item
Always pay for the item in full, in person at the time of the meeting, this is the safest and most fair option for both buyer and seller.
We don’t recommend paying for anything you haven’t inspected in person. If you cannot view the item yourself, try to find someone you trust to inspect it on your behalf.
Otherwise, try to arrange a video call with the seller and virtually inspect the item. Although we advise against this, if you trust the seller, this is a COVID safe way of trading goods.
Use Common Sense
If it’s too good to be true, it probably is. Be honest with yourself, research the product so you know any common issues to look out for and ask the right questions.
